Companies rely on an expanding set of applications to compete in today's rapidly evolving business environment: - They rely on a fast-growing array of applications and devices (email, collaboration tools, and smartphones/tablets) to communicate and conduct business with customers and business partners. - They are creating, collecting, and repurposing large, unstructured data sets in life sciences, geophysics, media, and manufacturing. - They are collecting, storing, and analyzing more social and sensor-generated data about environments, products, customers, and transactions. The promise of better and faster data-driven decision making based on all this information is pushing big data and analytics (BDA) technology to the top of executive agendas. To succeed, CIOs must place a laserlike investment focus on datacenter solutions that allow them to deliver scalable, reliable, and flexible infrastructure for fast-growing BDA environments. Digital transformation has become a top mandate for almost every IT and business leader. The ZK Research 2015 IT Priorities Survey found that 79% of businesses currently have a digital transformation initiative in progress (Exhibit 1). In the digital era, competitive advantage is no longer determined by which company has the best products or even the best people. Market leadership is based on an organization’s ability to analyze information, gain insights and make fast decisions to capitalize on market transitions. One important step in the journey to becoming a digital organization is to transform into an agile business—and it is impossible to do so without having an agile IT infrastructure to enable it. This is why businesses spent more than $12 billion on technology in 2015 to make IT more agile, according to ZK Research.

Today's datacenter networks must better adapt to and accommodate business-critical application workloads. Datacenters will have to increasingly adapt to virtualized workloads and to the ongoing enterprise transition to private and hybrid clouds. Pressure will mount on datacenters not only to provide increased bandwidth for 3rd Platform applications such as cloud and data analytics but also to deliver the agility and dynamism necessary to accommodate shifting traffic patterns (with more east-west traffic associated with server-to-server flows, as opposed to the traditional north-south traffic associated with client/server computing). Private cloud and legacy applications will also drive daunting bandwidth and connectivity requirements. This Technology Spotlight examines the increasing bandwidth requirements in enterprise datacenters, driven by both new and old application workloads, cloud and noncloud in nature. It also looks at how Cisco is meeting the bandwidth challenge posed by 3rd

What are the key elements of a collaboration framework that can help IT decision makers (ITDMs) and business decision makers (BDMs) come to a mutual understanding of how, where and why to use videoenabled collaboration solutions, in particular, F2F video? To answer this question, Techaisle conducted a survey of 1,269 ITDMs and BDMs with SMBs and midmarket businesses, across the US, Latin America, Europe, and Asia Pacific. The survey was commissioned by Cisco. The survey findings provide guidance to SMBs and midmarket decision makers on how the nature of the collaboration discussion is changing, drive acceptance and use of F2F video throughout their organization to maximize business payback, and align objectives with the outcomes that shape the activities of highgrowth innovative firms who are the most successful users of advanced collaboration technology.

Enterprises are using applications to gain competitive advantage. Success in this technology-based environment requires agility and flexibility. And if IT wants to be the primary technology solution partner for the business, the IT staff needs processes and tools in place to deliver solutions at a much faster pace. As digital services propel more and more business processes, cloud technology is proving to be a crucial addition to the IT services portfolio. It is far more scalable, and in many cases more cost effective, than its predecessors. Cloud infrastructure as a service (IaaS) and softwaredefined data center technologies—virtualized computing, networking, and storage—have helped IT address the “fast IT” challenge.

Technology’s role in business and society has shifted away from largely driving efficiencies to innovating and creating engaging experiences that attract and retain customers. Innovations and business outcomes are fueled by a perfect storm of technology trends in cloud, analytics, machine learning, IoT and the emerging API Economy. The convergence of these technologies has created new opportunities for enterprises to improve business performance by acquiring customers faster while creating brand loyalty. The role of technology expands the interaction with customers beyond the core of the enterprise – away from 100% dependencies on systems of records – and towards real-time, contextual interactions. Businesses are a digital business or they are evolving to become one. This requires enterprises to re-think how they build software architectures.

So what lessons can operators learn from the past experience with server virtualization? Beware of merely shifting costs from capital to operating expenditures. Be selective in virtualizing the right resources and functions driven by the business need, and not the technology lure.

Digital transformation is reshaping the business landscape faster than at any time in history. It used to take decades to disrupt a market, but natively digital companies such as Uber and Airbnb have disrupted their industries in just half a decade. Digitization is creating new winners and losers at an unprecedented rate. Organizations that adopt a digital strategy will leapfrog the competition, while those that do not will risk becoming irrelevant within five years. One important step in becoming a digital enterprise is becoming an agile organization—that is, having the ability to take advantage of market opportunities faster than the competition. This shift to being an agile business has now become a top initiative for IT and business leaders. However, business agility cannot be achieved without having an agile IT infrastructure to enable it. This is why businesses spent more than $12 billion on technology to make IT more agile in 2014, according to ZK Research.

Flexible work arrangements (FWAs) can come in many forms, including telecommuting, compressed workweeks and flexible scheduling that allows employees to perform tasks outside of core business hours. Improvements in technology have made FWAs possible for a broader segment of the labor force, but some of these arrangements have yet to achieve widespread acceptance in many organizations’ workplace cultures. However, SHRM research shows that participation in some FWAs has risen in recent years, and these measures have yielded positive results for companies’ recruitment and retention efforts, as well as their employees’ development and productivity.
