Business executives and managers at business-to-business (B2B) enterprises care about time, money, competitive advantage, customer loyalty and growth. Few pay much attention to the vital IT infrastructure that supports transactions and collaboration with trading partners—though that B2B backbone directly affects performance and profitability. In fact, just 26 percent of business managers view B2B integration as a competitive differentiator, according to a study for IBM by Vanson Bourne, a research consultancy. As a result, many enterprises continue to utilize manual and error-prone emails, faxes and file transfers for B2B transactions. Reliance on complex, brittle and antiquated systems to exchange critical data impacts time to market, cost-efficiency and satisfaction across suppliers and end-customers. Modernization of B2B integration in recent years has moved forward in fits and starts, often undermined by competing priorities and misalignment between business and IT managers.

he pursuits to reduce costs and avoid unplanned downtime remain primary operational goals in industrial plants. A convergence of factors has created an opportunity for industrial organizations such as manufacturing, oil and gas, chemicals and water treatment companies to aggressively pursue both. Simply put, OT is getting old. The industrial sector is heavily capital-intensive and traditionally utilizes equipment with long lifecycles. Organizations with such outdated automation systems are in dire need of OT modernization to keep up with the pace of change, customer demands and business priorities, and reduce the risk of critical failures and costly downtime. The rise of virtualization as a business tool has dramatically enhanced server and primary storage utilization. By allowing multiple operating systems and applications to run on a single physical server, organizations can significantly lower their hardware costs and take advantage of efficiency and agility improvements as more and more tasks become automated. This also alleviates the pain of fragmented IT ecosystems and incompatible data silos. Currently, this virtualization juggernaut shows no sign of slowing. As businesses recognize the potential for increased reliability and scalability offered by virtual technology, they are ramping up their investments in data center modernization and upgrading. In fact, 33 percent of the respondents to a recent ESG survey on cloud usage said that making greater use of server virtualization was one of their top five spending priorities for the next 12 to 18 months.

This also alleviates the pain of fragmented IT ecosystems and incompatible data silos. Protecting these virtualized environments, however, and the ever-growing amount of structured and unstructured data being created, still requires a complex, on-prem secondary storage model that imposes heavy administrative overhead and infrastructure costs. The increasing pressure on IT teams to maintain business continuity and information governance are changing how businesses view infrastructure resiliency and long-term data retention—they are consequently looking to new solutions to ensure immediate availability and complete protection of the

Typically, Shared Services Center (SSCs) automation initiatives have been undertaken to reduce costs and improve efficiency. These goals are achieved relatively easily within the first few years, most immediately through reduced labor costs and centralized activities. In fact, standardization and centralization deliver up to 50% savings. During subsequent phases, technology automation and outsourcing cut costs further. But, if cost reduction is the only clearly defined goal, organizations will reach a point of diminishing returns.
