Phishing is defined by the Financial Services Technology Consortium (FSTC) as a broadly launched social engineering attack in which an electronic identity is misrepresented in an attempt to trick individuals into revealing personal credentials that can be used fraudulently against them. In short, it’s online fraud to the highest degree. Although it’s been around for years, phishing is still one of the most common and effective online scams. The schemes are varied, typically involving some combination of spoofed email (spam), malicious software (malware), and fake websites to harvest personal information from unwitting consumers. The explosive rise of mobile devices, mobile applications, and social media networks has given phishers new vectors to exploit, along with access to volumes of personal data that can be used in more targeted attacks or spear phishing. The fact that phishing attacks are still so common highlights their efficacy and reinforces the need to implement comprehensive phishing and response plans to protect organizations. An effective phishing protection plan should focus on four primary areas: Prevention, Detection, Response, and Recovery. High-level recommendations for each of the four areas are outlined in this whitepaper.

This American Banker webcast, sponsored by IBM, provides new insight into cybercrime and fraud prevention. Financial institutions have invested heavily in fraud prevention technologies and programs. However, sophisticated organized crime syndicates continue to successfully attack financial institutions and their customers. These criminals adapt quickly by using advanced technology and with ever changing attack vectors to exploit information security and fraud protection gaps across payment types, banking channels, and organizational boundaries. Traditional fraud prevention technologies are simply not capable of detecting and preventing account takeover and advanced malware attacks. A new approach to counter fraud is needed.

When it comes to securing email and protecting against cyberattacks, most organizations focus their attention and resources on inbound emails. Yet, only 40% of email originates through inbound system traffic. The other 60% of email traffic is introduced via internal-to-internal (40%) or outbound (20%) email communications. This E-book takes a close look at several email-related activities that employees often engage in that contribute to the spread of insider threats and discusses what measures organizations can take to protect themselves.

The ongoing adoption of cloud computing by communications service providers (CSPs) continues to fundamentally reshape their business models and technology strategies on several levels. One such area that is garnering significant attention is the impact of the cloud on security services. This is because security services and the vital tools they encompass can be empowered through the adoption of a carrier cloud model. This, in turn, better positions CSPs to meet the demands of their customers, including those in the small to medium-size business (SMB) market segment. The timing of this migration is optimal, since many SMBs now recognize the threats they face and realize that given their limited IT budgets and lack of security expertise, CSPs are well positioned to protect them from cyberattacks. While the opportunity for CSPs is significant, many are hesitant to make a move in this area because they want to ensure they can address SMBs’ needs and maintain control of the service in a car

Globally, sophisticated cyber-attacks are compromising organizations at an unprecedented rate and with devastating consequences. Modern attackers, including criminal organizations, ideological groups, nation states and other advanced threat actors are motivated by a wide range of objectives that include financial gain, industrial espionage, cyber-warfare, and terrorism. In today’s competitive on-line world, the speed of change in customer behaviour is increasing. In addition, in industries such as retail banking, car insurance and to some extent retail, the Internet has become the dominant way in which customers interact with an organisation. Yet in many data warehouses today, being able to analyse customer on-line behaviour is often not possible because the clickstream web log data needed to do this is missing. It is a key point because customer access to the web has made loyalty cheap.

The world has changed. Yesterday everyone had a managed PC for work and all enterprise data was behind a firewall. Today, mobile devices are the control panel for our personal and professional lives. This change has contributed to the single largest technology-driven lifestyle change of the last 10 years. As productivity tools, mobile devices now access significantly more data than in years past. This has made mobile the new frontier for a wide spectrum of risk that includes cyber attacks, a range of malware families, non-compliant apps that leak data, and vulnerabilities in device operating systems or apps. A secure digital business ecosystem demands technologies that enable organizations to continuously monitor for threats and provide enterprise-wide visibility into threat intelligence.

System vulnerabilities, ransomware, malware, intrusions, and other malicious activities are on the rise, showing that today’s cybersecurity professionals are hard-pressed to keep enterprises secure. Although threats are growing in sophistication and attack vectors are expanding, many of the intrusions and cyber attacks happening today are simply a result of improper protections being put in place, systems going unpatched, or weak security policies. While much of the blame is being placed on cybersecurity professionals, the real blame should often be placed upon the tools and policies that many of those professionals have come to trust and the complexity that comes with them.

A dversaries, and cybercriminal organizations in particular, are building tools and using techniques that are becoming so difficult to detect that organizations are having a hard time knowing that intrusions are taking place. Passive techniques of watching for signs of intrusion are less and less effective. Environments are complicated, and no technology can find 100 percent of malicious activity, so humans have to “go on the hunt.” Threat hunting is the proactive technique that’s focused on the pursuit of attacks and the evidence that attackers leave behind when they’re conducting reconnaissance, attacking with malware, or exfiltrating sensitive data. Instead of just hoping that technology flags and alerts you to the suspected activity, you apply human analytical capacity and understanding about environment context to more quickly determine when unauthorized activity occurs. This process allows attacks to be discovered earlier with the goal of stopping them before intruders are able t

Every 14 seconds. That’s how often analysts predict ransomware will attack a business this year.1 Despite the best efforts to thwart ransomware attacks, cyber criminals are innovative, and they continue to create new malware. This means more sophisticated and targeted ransomware attacks are coming—all with the same goal: Disrupt business operations in the hopes victims will pay to restore order. No industry is immune. And because enterprises are now even more attractive targets than consumers,2 your organization must proactively prepare for when, not if, cyber criminals come for your data.
