After a long dry spell triggered in part by the global downturn in the economy, manufacturing is enjoying an economic and technological resurgence. According to the Institute of Supply Management1 (ISM), American manufacturing continues to improve. The ISM recently reported that manufacturing activity expanded in September 2014 for the 16th consecutive month, and that the overall national economy grew for the 64th consecutive month. Part of this growth is being fueled by the adoption of computer aided engineering (CAE) and analysis solutions powered by high performance computing (HPC)—especially by the Tier One manufacturers. HPC is beginning to make some inroads into the ranks of the small to medium sized manufacturers (SMMs), but the going is slow.

A high performance computing (HPC) cluster refers to a group of servers built from off-the-shelf components that are connected via certain interconnect technologies. A cluster can deliver aggregated computing power from its many processors with many cores — sometimes hundreds, even thousands — to meet the processing demands of more complex engineering software, and therefore deliver results faster than individual workstations. If your company is in the majority that could benefit from access to more computing power, a cluster comprised of commodity servers may be a viable solution to consider, especially now that they’re easier to purchase, deploy, configure and maintain than ever before. Read more and learn about the '5 Easy Steps to a High Performance Cluster'.

Enterprises, beware. Threat actors are continuing to eye businesses for high returns on investment in Q1 2019, breaching infrastructure, exfiltrating or holding data hostage, and abusing weak credentials for continued, targeted monitoring. From a steadfast increase of pervasive Trojans, such as Emotet, to a resurgence of ransomware lodged against corporate targets, cybercriminals are going after organizations with a vengeance. Yet every cloud has a silver lining, and for all the additional effort thrown at businesses, consumer threats are now on the decline. Ransomware against consumers has slowed down to a trickle and cryptomining, at a fever pitch against consumers this time last year, has all but died. Interestingly, this has resulted in an overall decline in the volume of malware detections from Q4 2018 to Q1 2019. While threat actors made themselves busy with challenging new victims, they ensnared targets in the old ways, using tried-and-true malspam and social engineering tactic

Cybercriminals have been upping their game this year; the use of file-less attacks with macros and PowerShell scripts to evade preventive defenses and sandboxes mean that they are getting better than ever at using phishing, social engineering and drive-by techniques to gain initial footholds in private domains – and once they arrive, they are often avoiding detection for extended periods of time. Between April and July 2018, Fidelis interviewed over 580 security professionals from around the globe to understand how they are shifting their detection strategies and how confident organizations are in their ability to not only prevent targeted attacks – but root out threats that have by-passed traditional preventive defenses.

Developing an optimal arc flash protection strategy for a given facility can be difficult due to the number of solutions and system variables involved. Effective arc flash hazard reduction is best achieved by establishing an overall system protection strategy that accounts for safety and operational requirements as well as system reliability and availability. An overview of available solution categories and application guidance based on experience in a wide variety of facility types is presented in order to assist engineers trying to implement “safety by design” principles to help deal with arc flash hazards. The approach provided addresses the complexities of the trade-offs between competing priorities and provides tools that help users develop effective protection strategies for the unique circumstances in a given facility.

Keeping aging switchgear performing at optimum performance levels can be challenging. When it comes to the reliability of an electrical distribution system, it’s not a question of if a system component will malfunction, but when. Electrical equipment ultimately degrades and reaches the end of its useful life, no matter how much maintenance is performed. And, with the advancements in the design of the new circuit breakers, those with older technology are no longer considered sustainable solutions. Plant managers and engineers must ensure continuity of operations and develop a plan to replace or upgrade aging switchgear. Facilities without a properly-implemented strategy put operations at risk that could lead to safety issues, equipment damage and/or downtime.

IBM Cloud Private for Data is an integrated data science, data engineering and app building platform built on top of IBM Cloud Private (ICP). The latter is intended to a) provide all the benefits of cloud computing but inside your firewall and b) provide a stepping-stone, should you want one, to broader (public) cloud deployments. Further, ICP has a micro-services architecture, which has additional benefits, which we will discuss. Going beyond this, ICP for Data itself is intended to provide an environment that will make it easier to implement datadriven processes and operations and, more particularly, to support both the development of AI and machine learning capabilities, and their deployment. This last point is important because there can easily be a disconnect Executive summary between data scientists (who often work for business departments) and the people (usually IT) who need to operationalise the work of those data scientists

The increase in sophisticated, targeted security threats by both external attackers and malicious insiders have made it extremely difficult for organizations to properly protect critical and sensitive information. The task of protecting these assets has only grown harder as IT environments have become more complex and widely distributed across geographic locations and in the cloud. Many recent high-profile breaches have one thing in common: They were accomplished through the compromise of passwords. In many cases, end-user passwords are initially hacked through various social engineering techniques. Then permissions are escalated to gain access to more privileged accounts — the keys to the kingdom. This unauthorized access can easily go undetected for weeks or even months, allowing hackers to see and steal information at their convenience. Unfortunately, many IT users lack a full understanding of how privileged accounts function, as well as the risks associated with their compromise an

Bandwidth. Speed. Throughput. These terms are not interchangeable. They are interrelated concepts in data networking that help measure capacity, the time it takes to get from one point to the next and the actual amount of data you’re receiving, respectively. When you buy an Internet connection from Spectrum Enterprise, you’re buying a pipe between your office and the Internet with a set capacity, whether it is 25 Mbps, 10 Gbps, or any increment in between. However, the bandwidth we provide does not tell the whole story; it is the throughput of the entire system that matters. Throughput is affected by obstacles, overhead and latency, meaning the throughput of the system will never equal the bandwidth of your Internet connection. The good news is that an Internet connection from Spectrum Enterprise is engineered to ensure you receive the capacity you purchase; we proactively monitor your bandwidth to ensure problems are dealt with promptly, and we are your advocates across the Internet w

The top data protection mandates from IT leaders are focused on improving the fundamental reliability and agility of the solution(s) in use. The mandate that follows closely behind is cost reduction, which is also seen as a top priority among data protection implementers. These challenges should not be seen as contradictory or mutually exclusive; in fact, they can all be addressed by improved data protection solutions that are engineered as much for efficiency as they are for reliability and capability.
