However, making sure that the APIs are always available, scalable, and secure is vital for the API economy to truly realize its potential. A major financial services firm built an API platform to earn revenue by exposing its backend functions, but needed a partner to make sure the platform was well supported and available 24/7 to partners and developers. As of May 2017, according to a report from The Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation (DTCC), which provides financial transaction and data processing services for the global financial industry, cloud computing has reached a tipping point1. Today, financial services companies can benefit from the capabilities and cost efficiencies of the cloud. In October of 2016, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), the Office of the Comptroller of Currency (OCC) and the Federal Reserve Board (FRB) jointly announced enhanced cyber risk management standards for financial institutions in an Advanced Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (ANPR)2. These proposed standards for enhanced cybersecurity are aimed at protecting the entire financial system, not just the institution. To meet these new standards, financial institutions will require the right cloud-based network security platform for comprehensive security management, verifiable compliance and governance and active protection of customer data

T raditional backup systems fail to meet the needs of modern organizations by focusing on backup, not recovery. They treat databases as generic files to be copied, rather than as transactional workloads with specific data integrity, consistency, performance, and availability requirements. Additionally, highly regulated industries, such as financial services, are subject to ever?increasing regulatory mandates that require stringent protection against data breaches, data loss, malware, ransomware, and other risks. These risks require fiduciary?class data recovery to eliminate data loss exposure and ensure data integrity and compliance. This book explains modern database protection and recovery challenges (Chapter 1), the important aspects of a database protection and recovery solution (Chapter 2), Oracle’s database protection and recovery solutions (Chapter 3), and key reasons to choose Oracle for your database protection and recovery needs (Chapter 4).

Using IBM Watson’s cognitive capabilities, companies can quickly differentiate their customer service quality by being more pro active and responsive to customer needs. Simply put, chatbots and virtual agents are the future of customer interactions. Building apps from scratch that incorporate natural language processing, speech to text recognition, visual recognition, analytics, and artificial intelligence requires broad expertise in these disciplines, large staffs, and a huge financial commitment. Making use of IBM Watson cognitive services brings these capabilities in-house quickly and without the capital investment that would be needed to develop the technologies within an organization.

In a market where compute and storage resources can be bought on demand with a credit card, vendors of on-premises hardware are seeking to tip the scales in their favor with ‘cloud-like’ pricing models that eliminate the need to commit capital to new platforms. At Dell EMC World in May, Dell Financial Services (DFS) rolled out Cloud Flex for HCI (hyperconverged infrastructure), part of the company’s push to evangelize the start-small-and-scale-up virtues of HCI technology. Cloud Flex lets customers acquire equipment on an all-opex basis, with no up-front product cost, steady monthly payments that reduce by up to 30% annually, and the ability to turn in equipment any time after 12 months without penalty. It’s part of a series of moves by Dell EMC meant to ease the financial risk of sticking with on-premises infrastructure in a cloud-enabled world

Organizations operating in the retail financial services sector – banks and insurers – need to work smart and fast to keep pace with the increasing demands of their customers. We may have a 24/7 love affair with our smartphones but it is clear that in the future we will be sharing information and making payments via fitbands, cars, TVs and white goods, as the Internet of Things fuses the physical and digital worlds. For incumbent banks and insurers, the challenge will be to leverage the possibilities of this new hyper-connected world to embed themselves in their customers’ daily lives. They need to change the way operate, which includes how they market, engage and communicate with their customer base. This will be a key defense against the growing ranks of digital newcomers seeking to disrupt and dislodge incumbents through an array of innovative and smart new offers. However, too many are moving too slowly, either from an excess of caution or complacency. This report should serve as a

The attacks and tools being used against financial services organizations are part of a complex ecosystem. This may seem like an obvious statement at first glance. When you read most industry reports, they tend to focus on a single aspect of the whole ecosystem, as if it were unrelated to other types of attacks. To be honest, we’ve been just as guilty of having a myopic view of attack traffic as anyone else. We wanted to do something different for this report. Instead of looking at a single type of attack, we stepped back to look at attacks against banks, credit unions, trading companies, and other organizations that make up financial services as a whole. Most defenders only see a very small segment of the overall traffic, whether they’re the target or the vendor supplying defensive tools. The breadth of Akamai’s products and our visibility into a significant portion of Internet traffic allows us to research multiple stages of the attack economy.

Security risks and breaches have become part of the daily landscape as companies and organizations of every size and in every vertical and industry announce that they have been compromised. In 2016 reported security breaches were up 40%, and this year is on pace to surpass that steep rise. Over the past year alone, there have been high-profile breaches in the gaming, financial services, hospitality, food service, consumer packaged goods, and retail sectors. Many of those breaches occurred due to vulnerabilities in applications and on websites. For example, this past April, the IRS announced a breach attributable to a tool designed to fetch data for the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form.
