The more you know about your people, the more you can enable them to do their best work. And in turn, the greater the chance of business success. Yet, a rapidly changing world of work makes it difficult for companies to achieve this. There is a growing global skills crisis, and it’s getting worse. A shortage of skilled people makes it tough to find and attract the people you need — and it’s even tougher to get them through the door once you find them. To win the war for talent, you need to understand and engage with your candidates better than ever before.

HR processes are changing. And, with the global skills crisis, HR Directors are struggling to attract and retain the best talent. Their departments are in flux, and 77% of organisations report a perceived lack of strategic value from HR.* If you’re going to win the war for talent, your organisation will need to make a radical change. It must transform its HR and become a People Company, utilising people data and analytics to make decisions based on real evidence. This will improve the way you interact with current and future employees, providing great workforce experiences. The result will be a more committed and engaged workforce, and increased interest in joining your organisation. From a business perspective too, you’ll benefit through higher levels of productivity, efficiency and improved performance and engagement.

Workforce analytics has become an essential business tool for leading companies that view workforce performance as the key to improving company results, according to a new global survey of business leaders by Harvard Business Review Analytics Services. Workforce analytics is a set of integrated capabilities (technologies, metrics, data, and processes) to measure and improve workforce performance. The goal is simple: put the right people with the right skills in the right work, provide them with the necessary training and development opportunities, and engage and empower them to perform at their highest possible level.

Making your talent global-ready is key to your organization's future. A big part of global readiness lies in language and cultural skills. Knowledge of another language and culture builds bridges to customers and colleagues, and studies show that the ability to connect delivers measurable business impact. Building effective language and cultural learning programs is not difficult, but first HR must uncover the need - which often remains hidden from plain view.

In global, multicultural organizations, simply expecting all employees to speak one common language, such as English, marginalizes the potential impact of international talent and leaves monolingual staff ill-equipped to help the organization compete effectively in a globalized environment. In an increasingly global economy, U.S. companies will perform better by hiring individuals who can communicate in foreign languages and helping current employees develop language skills. Forbes Insights, in conjunction with Rosetta Stone, surveyed more than 100 executives at large U.S. businesses (annual revenues of more than $500 million) and found that language barriers have a broad and pervasive impact on business operations. The survey found that foreign language skills will be even more vital in the future and that language abilities can help executives advance their careers, speed overseas expansion, and boost corporate—as well as personal—success.

Time and resource allocation for language programs has been shrinking while the need for multilingualism only grows. It is critical that our students remain competitive on the global playing field. As the benefits of a multilingual society become clearer, parents insist that language learning is important for their children’s future success. However, our current education system still lacks the resources to provide all children the opportunity to develop the skills that will prepare them to succeed in an interconnected world. Global competence and language skills are no longer just nice to have—they are essential.

Knowledge and strategic relationships fuel many organizations in today’s rapidly changing, global economy. As such, organizations need to leverage the individuals—and their networks—that possess the most relevant knowledge, whether they are current employees or are only loosely connected to the organization. To do this, organizations should create and leverage peer collaboration networks that enable them to identify and connect with individuals who have the unique skills, knowledge, and capabilities these organizations need. Bersin’s Research, Why Reputations and Networks Matter in the Open Talent Economy, indicates that this approach works in driving value—organizations that have effectively used internal reputation networks and profile databases have been able to increase key metrics such as employees’ time to productivity and innovation levels.
