For many organizations, the wide area network (WAN) infrastructure that connects an enterprise’s remote and branch offices has not changed for decades. Over the years, organizations consolidated many regional data centers into a few highly available data center locations which meant that remote locations had to connect to centralized applications over WANs and all internet traffic went through these data centers as well. This introduced bandwidth constraints and latency issues. The development in WAN optimization provided incremental and measurable improvement in WAN performance and provided some bandwidth cost containment. However, that technology typically was only deployed at the most problematic sites that struggled to achieve acceptable levels of performance and user experience. It did not solve all the issues with WAN connectivity. WAN infrastructure planning was limited to increases in capacity that were met by provisioning additional carrier MPLS (multiprotocol label switching)

Walk past your data center, and you might hear a soft, plaintive call: “Feed me, feed me…” It is not your engineers demanding more pizza. It is your servers and applications. And the call is growing louder New Cisco® 40-Gbps bidirectional (BiDi) optical technology lets you bring 40-Gbps speeds to the access layer using the same 10-Gbps cable plant you are using today. It is a huge cost savings, whether you are upgrading your current data center or building a new one. And it means you can start taking advantage of 40-Gbps performance for your business right now without needing special budget approval and without having to wait a year to get the capacity you need.

This document discusses the hardware architecture of the new switch platforms in the Cisco Nexus® 9000 Series Switches product family: in particular, the Cisco Nexus 9200 platform switches. The Cisco Nexus 9200 platform is a new extension of the Cisco Nexus 9000 Series. The platform uses a compact fixed-switch form factor and operates in the NX-OS mode, based on Cisco NX-OS Software. Built with next-generation Cisco application-specific circuits (ASICs), the Cisco Nexus 9200 platform brings high-performance and high-density 25, 50, and 100 Gigabit Ethernet connectivity to data center networks, providing industry-leading performance, power efficiency, and capabilities in compact fixed-form-factor switches.
