The IBM Spectrum Scale solution provided for up to 11x better throughput results than EMC Isilon for Spectrum Protect (TSM) workloads. Using published data, Edison compared a solution comprised of EMC® Isilon® against an IBM® Spectrum Scale™ solution. (IBM Spectrum Scale was formerly IBM® General Parallel File System™ or IBM® GPFS™, also known as code name Elastic Storage). For both solutions, IBM® Spectrum Protect™ (formerly IBM Tivoli® Storage Manager or IBM® TSM®) is used as a common workload performing the backups to target storage systems evaluated.

Value is migrating throughout the IT industry from hardware to software and services. High Performance Computing (HPC) is no exception. IT solution providers must position themselves to maximize their delivery of business value to their clients – particularly industrial customers who often use several applications that must be integrated in a business workflow. This requires systems and hardware vendors to invest in making their infrastructure “application ready”. With its Application Ready solutions, IBM is outflanking competitors in Technical Computing and fast-tracking the delivery of client business value by providing an expertly designed, tightly integrated and performance optimized architecture for several key industrial applications. These Application Ready solutions come with a complete high-performance cluster including servers, network, storage, operating system, management software, parallel file systems and other run time libraries, all with commercial-level solution s

IBM rarely, if ever publicly, talks about the future of IBM Z. When IBM's sales managers have a oneon-one client conversation (under NDA), they might inform the customer about the next processor, but the company rarely talks about the mid- to long-term future publicly. An obvious reason for this is not to disrupt sales, but at the same time, IBM believes that it is sometimes working on problems that the market might not know it has yet. IBM felt that it was doing a disservice to its current and future customers by not being more open, which is why Tarun Chopra, director, Product Management for IBM Systems, and Ross Mauri, general manager, IBM Z, agreed to talk to IDC about the future of IBM Z. In these conversations, IBM was not putting a date on any of the topics it was willing to discuss. But the company was willing to talk about where it is investing R&D dollars and skills.

For the past several years IBM has been divesting its hardware business. At the same time, Oracle has continued to invest in IT infrastructure and cloud innovation. Oracle SPARC servers offer you greater performance and efficiency compared to IBM Power systems, with additional security and lower costs, along with the flexibility to run your applications on-premises or in the Oracle Cloud.

LinuxONE from IBM is an example of a secure data-serving infrastructure platform that is designed to meet the requirements of current-gen as well as next-gen apps. IBM LinuxONE is ideal for firms that want the following: ? Extreme security: Firms that put data privacy and regulatory concerns at the top of their requirements list will find that LinuxONE comes built in with best-in-class security features such as EAL5+ isolation, crypto key protection, and a Secure Service Container framework. ? Uncompromised data-serving capabilities: LinuxONE is designed for structured and unstructured data consolidation and optimized for running modern relational and nonrelational databases. Firms can gain deep and timely insights from a "single source of truth." ? Unique balanced system architecture: The nondegrading performance and scaling capabilities of LinuxONE — thanks to a unique shared memory and vertical scale architecture — make it suitable for workloads such as databases and systems of reco

In most use cases involving flash storage deployments, the business environment changes, driving a need for higher-performance storage. However, the case of Epic Systems Corporation software is the opposite—the storage requirements haven’t changed recently, but the options for addressing them have. Epic, a privately-held company founded in 1979 and based in Verona,Wisconsin, makes applications for medical groups, hospitals and other healthcare organizations. Epic software typically exhibits high frequency, random storage accesses with stringent latency requirements. IBM has been working with Epic to develop host-side and storage-side solutions to meet these requirements. Extensive testing has demonstrated that the combination of IBM® POWER8™ servers and IBM FlashSystem™ storage more than meets the performance levels Epic recommends for the backend storage supporting its software implementations—at a cost point multiple times lower than other storage alternatives.

The perceived x86 benefits of lower acquisition cost and standardizing on are often made at the expense of performance, reliability, scalability and manageability. Moreover, many are driven by the impression that x86-based systems will solve all their computing challenges—when often that is not the case. This eBook looks at companies that chose to invest in IBM® Power Systems™ rather than continuing to run on or migrate to x86-based systems — and why.

Electronic health records (EHRs) are necessary, but were not designed to anchor population health management (PHM). This is partly because they lack semantic interoperability, which is the ability of disparate information systems to share data and enable communications among users in a meaningful way. This paper explains how an approach that includes a care collaboration platform can manage population health by aggregating and normalizing the necessary data.
