The term “Big Data” has become virtually synonymous with “schema on read” (where data is applied to a plan or schema as it is ingested or pulled out of a stored location) unstructured data analysis and handling techniques like Hadoop. These “schema on read” techniques have been most famously exploited on relatively ephemeral human-readable data like retail trends, twitter sentiment, social network mining, log files, etc. But what if you have unstructured data that, on its own, is hugely valuable, enduring, and created at great expense? Data that may not immediately be human readable or indexable on search? Exactly the kind of data most commonly created and analyzed in science and HPC. Research institutions are awash with such data from large-scale experiments and extreme-scale computing that is used for high-consequence

Despite the greater frequency of extreme weather events occurring around the globe, freight still has to be delivered on time and on a year-round basis. Truck drivers often find themselves driving through rain, snow, sleet, hail, fog, ice, thunderstorms, tornadoes and high winds. While drivers aren't generally expected to stick to pre-planned routes in extreme weather, fleet managers don’t really have the capacity to outline every possible alternate route in anticipation of a future hazardous weather scenario. Data-driven route planning saves fuel, prevents accidents and improves ETAs, which is why many logistics companies are turning to advanced supply chain optimization solutions with real-time weather alerts and rerouting functionalities. Today, tech-savvy fleet managers are looking for exactly this type of tech innovations to provide them with a sharp competitive edge in an already crowded industry such as long-haul logistics. As one of the world's leading location platforms, HER

Whenever personal data related to us is anonymized, it has been manipulated in such a way that it can no longer be linked back to us, right? Think again. In the digital era, we do not always blend into the crowd. Location data is part of this equation because our mobility habits are unique to us. Techniques like anonymization offer service providers numerous ways to protect privacy while retaining enough data to be useful - the challenge is finding the right balance. By reading this eBook, you’ll discover critical ways public and private organizations can help protect users’ privacy: • Find out why de-identification does not always mean anonymity • Understand how privacy by design can be used for standards and product or service creation • Discover how gathering just data you need will minimize the privacy impact of collection • Find out about new and emerging privacy-enhancing technologies

Rising urbanization and upward of a billion vehicles in operation across the world have brought unprecedented levels of traffic and congestion to our major towns and cities. On the frontline are the emergency dispatchers and responders. Every day, they face complex challenges as they attempt to navigate through congested traffic, unexpected road closures and work zones in a timely manner. It is therefore vital for the real-time information they receive to be as accurate and fresh as possible, so that crucial, split-second decisions can be taken correctly, enabling all designated units to reach the incident location as fast as possible.

In this paper, we provide an overview of the Two Sigma Factor Lens, designed for analyzing multi-asset portfolios and derived from returns of broad, liquid asset class proxy indexes. This lens is intended to be: • Holistic, by capturing the large majority of cross-sectional and time-series risk for typical institutional portfolios; • Parsimonious, by using as few factors as possible; • Orthogonal, with each risk factor capturing a statistically uncorrelated risk across assets; • Actionable, such that desired changes to factor exposure can be readily translated into asset allocation changes. Finally, we discuss methods for constructing and assessing the Two Sigma Factor Lens that can be extended to produce additional risk factors for new sub-assetclasses or cross-sectional risks that may not currently be captured by the lens.1 This factor lens, and our ongoing work to expand it, form the foundations of the VennTM platform.

Performance evaluation is coming of age. Once a narrow, back office role focused solely on crunching returns, it has become ever more integrated into the DNA of investment firms. Both internally and externally, performance evaluation adds value, helping senior management make key judgement calls where the difference between the right solution and the wrong solution is the difference between growth or decline. The performance analyst of the future will provide valuable input into nearly every area of an investment firm. What began as a mathematical task—calculating investment returns—is morphing into something much broader. The objective of performance evaluation today is determining what is behind the return being analyzed. What were the key drivers—allocation or selection? What risk was taken to achieve the return? Was it skill, or was it luck, that produced the return?

Government agencies often look to promote new technology for cost-savings and efficiency, but it does not stop there. The second and third-tier effects of technology can be long lasting for citizens, businesses, and economies. When public institutions adopt the cloud, they experience an internal transformation. Inside an organization, cloud usage drives greater accessibility of data and information sharing, increases worker productivity, and improves resource allocation. The external benefit of the cloud is recognized through a government’s ability to put reclaimed time and resources toward serving citizens. This includes provisioning public services, such as occupational-skills training, quicker and more effective service delivery, a pathway to a more productive workforce, and ultimately, a boost to local development. This whitepaper examines the enterprise-level benefits of the cloud, as well as the residual impact on economic development. The U.S. Economic Development Administration
