In years past, device functionality was enough to sell most embedded products without much concern for cybersecurity. Of course there were exceptions, such as in critical infrastructure, aviation, and military, for which security was always of importance. But today’s environment has evolved on several fronts. First, organizations across nearly all markets are demanding Internet connectivity to monitor and control devices as well as to aggregate and analyze data. Second, the magnitude of security threats has exploded, driven by highly sophisticated hackers including organized criminal gangs seeking financial returns, creating a constantly evolving threat landscape. Third, the increasingly complex nature of connected systems makes them ever more challenging to protect. The more complex a system, the more potential vulnerabilities it may contain. And fourth, the data generated by connected devices represent an asset that is becoming increasingly valuable for organizations to derive insigh

The Tenth Annual State of the Network Global Study focuses a lens on the network team’s role in security investigations. Results indicate that 88 percent of network teams are now spending time on security issues. In fact, out of 1,035 respondents, nearly 3 out of 4 spend up to 10 hours per week working exclusively on these types of problems - in addition to managing network upgrades, SDN, cloud, and big data initiatives. When it comes to technology adoption, both cloud and 100 GbE deployment continue to grow aggressively. VoIP adoption is closing in on 60 percent and software-defined networking (SDN) is projected to cross the halfway mark, indicating compounding network complexity amidst the ongoing struggle to ID security threats. With growth comes change and some trends identified in this year’s survey include a rise in email and browser-based malware attacks (63 percent) and an increase in sophistication (52 percent). Nearly 1 in 3 also report a surge in DDoS attacks, signaling a ne

APIs are an emerging technology for integrating applications using web technology. This approach is exploding in popularity because it builds on well-understood techniques and leverages some existing infrastructure. But it is a mistake to think we can secure APIs using the same methods and technology that we used to secure the conventional, browser-centric web. While it is true that APIs share many of the same threats that plague the web, they are fundamentally differently and have an entirely unique risk profile that you need to manage. This eBooklet provides an overview of these new risks, and offers five simple solutions to counter the common threats. By adopting a secure API architecture from the beginning, organizations can pursue an API strategy more safely and securely — and reap the benefits of agile integration promised by this exciting new technology.

What you can’t see will hurt you The situation is critical, because the percentage of encrypted user traffic has more than doubled since 2014, exceeding 80 percent, according to F5 Labs' 2017 TLS Telemetry report. So, of course, now there are SSL visibility solutions that provide decryption services allowing those security controls to see what they’re doing. But visibility, by itself, isn’t enough. Security teams and network operations have found that setting up decryption zones is not easy. Security teams often have to resort to manual daisy-chaining or tedious configuration to manage decryption/encryption across the entire security stack. And then they find that exceptions abound. And lastly, you need to scan your inbound and outbound traffic for tomorrow’s threats, and SSL Orchestrator is the tool that lets your security controls keep your organization’s name out of the papers and away from those pesky GDPR fines. The WannaCry ransomware attack in May 2017 crippled the UK’s National Health Service (NHS) and disrupted a range of organizations across 150 countries. Despite being a relatively unsophisticated attack, WannaCry was able to make such a global impact due to preventable vulnerabilities that had largely gone unaddressed. There were many more attacks in 2017, including high-profile breaches at Uber and Equifax, where heeding cyber-security recommendations may have reduced the impact and fallout. The scale and sophistication of cyber-attacks is not slowing down – ranging from phishing scams to cryptocurrency-based cyber-attacks, to statesponsored attacks on industrial control systems. These attacks present an ever growing challenge and serve as a reminder that organizations cannot afford to be complacent in the face of cyber threats. We’re living in a time when cyberattacks are a matter of when, not if, and security professionals must focus on mitigating their extent and damage.

The world is an uncertain place. Particularly for cyber security professionals, many of whom have learned the hard way that they can’t rest on their laurels. New technologies and fresh threats are constantly emerging, and these threats come from both outside and within organizations. In our 2019 privileged access threat research, we discovered that almost two thirds of respondents (64%) think it is likely they’ve suffered a breach due to employee access, while 58% say the same about vendors. Meanwhile, the devices intended to make life easier can expose businesses further. Although hostile, external attacks are considered a significant or moderate concern by 61% of businesses, the threat of misused or abused insider access follows very closely behind at 58%. At the same time, 57% of security decision makers perceive at least a moderate risk from Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) policies and the Internet of Things (IoT) at 57%. In this fourth edition of BeyondTrust’s annual Privileged Acces

As the number and severity of cyberattacks continue to grow with no end in sight, cybersecurity teams are implementing new tools and processes to combat these emerging threats. However, the oneoverriding requirement for meeting this challenge is improved speed. Whether it’s speed of detection, speed of remediation or other processes that now need to be completed faster, the ability to do things quickly is key to effective cybersecurity. The reason why speed is essential is simple: As the dwell time for malware increases, the lateral spread of an attack broadens, the number of potentially breached files expands, and the difficulty in remediating the threat increases. And the stealthy nature of many of the newer threats makes finding them faster?before they become harder to detect?a critical focus in reducing the impact of an intrusion. These requirements make it essential that security operations centers (SOCs) can complete their activities far more quickly, both now and moving forwa

Network performance and security are vital elements of any business. Organisations are increasingly adopting virtualisation and cloud technologies to boost productivity, cost savings and market reach. With the added complexity of distributed network architectures, full visibility is necessary to ensure continued high performance and security. Greater volumes of data, rapidlyevolving threats and stricter regulations have forced organisations to deploy new categories of security tools, e.g. Web Access Firewalls (WAFs) or Intrusion Prevention Systems (IPS). Yet, simply adding more security tools may not always be the most efficient solution.
