Most people define mobile devices – smartphones and tablets – as those running a mobile-optimized operating system (e.g. iOS, Android, Windows Phone). There’s a trend emerging, however, in which traditional mobile devices are gaining functionality typically associated with PCs. At the same time, PCs are being architected more like mobile devices — an interbreeding of species, if you will. The iPad Pro, for example, has a keyboard. With Windows 10, phones and tablets can run “Universal” apps that also run on PCs. Windows 10 also has application-layer sandboxing, code-signing, and an app store with apps pre-vetted by Microsoft. In certain configurations (i.e. enterprise-managed devices), a laptop running Windows 10 has a security architecture that looks strikingly similar to a smartphone or tablet.

Businesses of all sizes adopt technology to make them more productive, cost effective or flexible and help them compete. Over the years the adoption of tools such as mobile phones, wireless laptops, the internet and email have all been driven by such expectations. Small and mid-sized businesses (SMBs) are often at the forefront as these technologies can give them a lead on their larger competitors. What starts as a useful extra tool or 'competitive edge' soon becomes the accepted norm and a search for improved quality and utility then ensues.

The number of mobile devices managed by enterprises increased 72 percent from 2014 to 2015. This onslaught of technology such as notebooks, smartphones, tablets, watches and gadgets has transformed the way users work. These devices provide users in just about every sector with access to the information and tools they need to do their jobs, wherever and whenever they need them. They’re free to work at their desks, in conference rooms, while visiting clients on the road or during a child’s baseball practice. They can input data directly into a medical chart, an order form or an inspection report, rather than doubling their work by transcribing handwritten notes later in the day.

Over a decade ago, mobile telephony entered the enterprise through the back door: employees who could afford mobile phones occasionally used them for business; specific business units budgeted for employee mobiles and then procured them locally; policies surrounding the usage of mobile phones for work were - where they existed at all - haphazard; there was little means of policy enforcement; and in no case were these mobile phones integrated into a business's fixed telephony strategy, let alone its IT strategy. This stands in sharp contrast to other office technologies, such as PCs, faxes, and copiers.

At the end of last year, the US alone had 435 million smart mobile devices in use — that’s 35% higher than the total US population. Among smartphone users, 68% use messaging apps regularly. And 84% of smartphone engagement with apps is spent communicating via text, email, and social channels. What does this mean for brands? The current state of CX is broken. Brands focus too much on channel and transaction, ignoring the customer’s preferences, and, ultimately, negatively affecting their bottom line. But wherever there’s a disconnect, there’s also opportunity. In increasing numbers brands are turning to messaging platforms and apps to offer more efficient, convenient customer service.
