With High Performance Computing (HPC) supercomputer systems that comprise tens, hundreds, or even thousands of computing cores, users are able to increase application performance and accelerate their workflows to realize dramatic productivity improvements. The performance potential often comes at the cost of complexity. By their very nature, supercomputers comprise a great number of components, both hardware and software, that must be installed, configured, tuned, and monitored to maintain maximum efficiency. In a recent report, IDC lists downtime and latency as two of the most important problems faced by data center managers.

Big data applications represent a fast-growing category of high-value applications that are increasingly employed by business and technical computing users. However, they have exposed an inconvenient dichotomy in the way resources are utilized in data centers. Conventional enterprise and web-based applications can be executed efficiently in virtualized server environments, where resource management and scheduling is generally confined to a single server. By contrast, data-intensive analytics and technical simulations demand large aggregated resources, necessitating intelligent scheduling and resource management that spans a computer cluster, cloud, or entire data center. Although these tools exist in isolation, they are not available in a general-purpose framework that allows them to inter operate easily and automatically within existing IT infrastructure.

When it comes to generating increasingly larger data sets and stretching the limits of high performance computing (HPC), the fi eld of genomics and next generation sequencing (NGS) is in the forefront. The major impetus for this data explosion began in 1990 when the U.S. kicked off the Human Genome Project, an ambitious project designed to sequence the three billion base pairs that constitute the complete set of DNA in the human body. Eleven years and $3 billion later the deed was done. This breakthrough was followed by a massive upsurge in genomics research and development that included rapid advances in sequencing using the power of HPC. Today an individual’s genome can be sequenced overnight for less than $1,000.

Backup and recovery needs a radical rethink. When today’s incumbent solutions were designed over a decade ago, IT environments were exploding, heterogeneity was increasing, and backup was the protection of last resort. The goal was to provide a low cost insurance policy for data, and to support this increasingly complex multi-tier, heterogeneous environment. The answer was to patch together backup and recovery solutions under a common vendor management framework and to minimize costs by moving data across the infrastructure or media.

Investment casting is a precise manufacturing methodology that delivers value across industries, from mechanical, automotive and aerospace parts to intricate dental work, jewelry and sculpture. For centuries the trade-off for smooth and accurate investment casted parts has been high costs and long casting pattern lead times. Now the evolution of parts is accelerating dramatically in many industries resulting in shorter product life cycles and lower volumes of casted parts between cycles. Waiting for tooling for obsolete parts for aging aircraft also mean delays for aircraft to be repaired, costing time and money. Demand for faster foundry production is increasing in all industries and foundries need to be ready to respond. To find out how 3D Sysytems can help your business, download this eBook today.

Collaboration among compliance safety, and risk DS Services, a distributor of leading beverage brands to residential and business customers, employs more than 3,500 drivers nationwide. Tracking its drivers – and ensuring they’re qualified to be behind the wheel – isn’t easy. “Reviewing motor vehicle records (MVRs) can take weeks, as every state reports violation information differently,” says Jason Gay, DOT compliance administrator for DS Services. “I was spending 12 to 15 hours a week on paperwork alone. It was time to simplify the process.” DS Services originally turned to SambaSafety to help reduce paperwork and increase efficiency; however, by incorporating continuous driver monitoring into its safety program, DS Services is able to impact its business in . other positive ways.

To remain competitive, manufacturers must focus on achieving new growth while driving down costs. Key to achieving this is greater flexibility and a dramatic upturn in operational efficiency across the manufacturing process. One area ripe for improvement is intralogistics transportation. Many manufacturers still rely on autonomous guide vehicles (AGVs) to undertake repetitive transport tasks; but, rigid in nature, they do not support today’s demand-driven, dynamic manufacturing environments. Intelligent autonomous mobile robots (AMRs), like SEIT* from Milvus Robotics, offer a viable and cost-effective alternative. This solution brief describes how to solve business challenges through investment in innovative technologies.

There can be no doubt that the architecture for analytics has evolved over its 25-30 year history. Many recent innovations have had significant impacts on this architecture since the simple concept of a single repository of data called a data warehouse. First, the data warehouse appliance (DWA), along with the advent of the NoSQL revolution, selfservice analytics, and other trends, has had a dramatic impact on the traditional architecture. Second, the emergence of data science, realtime operational analytics, and self-service demands has certainly had a substantial effect on the analytical architecture.
