New digital technology now makes it feasible to integrate process control and SIF within a common automation infrastructure. While this can provide productivity and asset management benefits, if not done correctly, it can also compromise the safety and security of an industrial operation. Cybersecurity and sabotage vulnerability further accentuate the need for securing the safety instrumented system (SIS). Certainly, a common platform approach using similar hardware and software dedicated for control and safety functions, respectively, can provide the potential for cost savings. However, it is widely acknowledged that utilizing separate, independent, and diverse hardware/software for safety and control is the optimal way to protect against potentially catastrophic common cause and systematic design and application errors. Different vendors offer varied degrees of integration and solutions. The question is: how to provide an integrated control and safety solution with advanced functionality and productivity without compromising safety and security? And, where do users draw the line? A third-party (e.g., TÜV) certification of the hardware/software systems to IEC 61508 specifications carries significant advantages, but should this be the only criterion? How does a third-party certificate extend to the plant’s overall assignment of risk reduction credits for all independent protection layers (IPL)? Control system embedded safety logic solvers may actually increase the SIL requirements of the SIF if no credit is allowed for the distributed control system (DCS) as an IPL. If you're looking to decrease power consumption in your existing data center (and who isn't?), the first step should be a detailed diagnosis. If, on the other hand, you’re constructing a new data center, or expanding or upgrading your current center, it’s critical that energy efficiency is built in from the start. This short IBM video addresses both.

Whilst many organizations have invested resources in managing their IT infrastructure, few apply the same strategic focus to the document output environment. This can represent a huge cost drain, estimated to represent between 1% and 3% of total revenue. A managed and optimized print environment will lead to significant cost reductions whilst improving productivity and boosting any organization’s green credentials.

After years of uncontrolled growth, many data centers face a crisis as they run into space and power constraints. While remedies exist, present business practices do not encourage the prioritization of power reduction within one of the most power hungry areas of a business — the data center.

Given today’s economic climate, businesses are, more than ever, looking to create additional value through the reduction of risk and by saving costs. For many, the economic downturn is seen as the best time to optimise the infrastructure that they already have in place, to look at ways to trim unnecessary expenditure and to use existing resources more effectively. As organisations are increasingly reliant on data networks that encompass an ever-growing range and number of internet protocol (IP) enabled devices and applications, they need to more effectively administer and manage these assets—they can no longer take the management of their IP networks for granted.
