Patient falls were the largest category of adverse events reported at Barnes- Jewish Hospital. Progress in meeting targets for reducing falls and fall injury rates had been static despite multiple efforts. One component of the hospital’s Fall Reduction Program was a portable bed exit alarm system—a Bed-Check Classic-Check® control unit (CU) with Sensormat® pressure sensitive mat— widely used throughout the hospital. Due to high demand by staff, the CU was often not available, resulting in delayed care delivery and staff dissatisfaction. Loss or damage due to handoff between staff and the central service department resulted in additional resources and costs. Read this case study to learn how Barnes-Jewish Hospital implemented Bed-Check® Fall Management Solution as a part of their Fall Reduction Program, resulting in decreased fall injury rates and improved staff satisfaction.

The Internet of Things (IoT) didn’t just connect everything everywhere; It laid the groundwork for the next industrial revolution. Connected devices sending data was only one achievement of the IoT—but one that helped solve the problem of data spread across countless silos that was not collected because it was too voluminous and/or too expensive to analyze. Now, with advances in cloud computing and analytics, cheaper and more scalable factory solutions are available. This, in combination with the cost and size of sensors continuously being reduced, supplies the other achievement: the possibility for every organization to digitally transform. Using a Smart Factory system, all relevant data is aggregated, analyzed, and acted upon. Sensors, devices, people, and processes are part of a connected ecosystem providing: • Reduced downtime • Minimized surplus and defects • Deep insights • End-to-end real-time visibility

It’s your first cruise vacation and you’re ready to board. You check one last time to be sure the smart wristband the cruise line sent you last week is securely fastened. Then you join the rest of the crowd on the dock. As you calculate which boarding line is shortest, a crew member glances at your wristband and directs you to a special entrance. No waiting. Once at your room, a sensor verifies the ID in your device and the door opens automatically, saving you from having to juggle bags to find a key.

Digital business brings to mind innovative technologies: mobile devices, intelligent sensors, wearable devices, virtual reality, chatbots, blockchain, machine learning, and other technology. For some, it also reflects the rapid rise of new digitally native businesses that have disrupted traditional business models and destabilized established companies and industry sectors. For the majority of organizations, digital business means pivoting to a culture of organizational agility, where the rapid pace of demand can only be satisfied by faster and more flexible development and delivery models. As most organizations do not have the luxury of completely rebuilding their technology foundation or immediately adopting new practices and mindsets, they are embracing gradual yet fundamental shifts in culture, processes, and technology to support greater velocity and agility.

Higher education has come under increasing scrutiny as never before due to rising costs, changes in future job requirements, and new forms of learning opportunities offered by non-traditional companies and institutions. Students and parents are rightfully questioning the value of higher education based on perceived outcomes as well as staggering student loans that in some cases could take a lifetime to pay back. While the value equation debate rages on, there is another phenomenon taking place. It is nothing short of a revolution regarding the advances in technology and how institutions of higher learning along with nontraditional organizations are utilizing these powerful new tools. These new tools include new mobile devices, enhanced and feature-rich learning management systems, data-feeding sensors, 3D printers, smart classrooms, smart buildings, and collaboration tools allowing students and faculty to collaborate just about anywhere face-to-face, virtually.

Digital transformation (DX) is the continuous process by which enterprises adapt to or drive disruptive change by leveraging digital competencies, such as harnessing sensor data or using location, customer profile, and a mobile app to make shopping recommendations. DX reshapes the organization's culture where required; leverages existing processes, systems, and assets; and creates net-new digital capabilities as needed. With DX, there is the need to embrace new business models and new architectures and technologies that will help an enterprise with customer-facing innovation as well as transition existing systems, processes, organization structure, and relationships to support the transformation.

Kevin Ashton founded the Auto-ID Center at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and has done pioneering work in radio-frequency identification and sensor technology. Ashton is known for coining the term “the Internet of Things” to describe a system where the Internet is connected to the physical world via ubiquitous sensors. In 2015, he spoke at a European customer service conference and noted that field service management is the first industry being transformed by IoT. Some people in the industry have noted that the entire IoT concept came from trying to solve field service problems in 1999. IoT’s origin story lies in field service management. Clearly, field service management and IoT are deeply intertwined. But how are the changes being implemented? And how can you benefit from them?
