Drive quality earlier in the development process with continuous testing. Large development organizations have increasingly been adopting select agile practices to enable faster development, create more reliable software, and reduce costs. Chief among these practices is providing developers early and frequent feedback from users, from other developers, and especially from the programming, build, and test tools. In the latter category, continuous integration and continuous testing are emerging as valuable techniques for identifying errors early so they can be corrected immediately by the developer who made the code changes.

The business context for process excellence and business process management (BPM) has changed dramatically since the 2009-to-2010 recession. During the recession, BPM software and services saw impressive double-digit growth as a result of enterprises slashing costs and boosting worker productivity. Now, executive agendas have shifted to focus on growing revenue, expanding the customer base, and delivering new digital products and services. Enterprise and process architects are reshaping their business cases for BPM around these new drivers. This is not an easy task. However, process excellence will play a critical role for forward-thinking enterprise architects that invest the time to link BPM to new front-office drivers to help the organization drive digital transformation. This report replaces “Building The Case For Your BPM Initiative” in the business process management playbook and provides guidance on developing revenue and customer-focused business cases.

The cloud is here to stay, and Microsoft SharePoint users are finally making the move. Since 2013, the number of SharePoint users with intentions of moving their SharePoint sites to the cloud has doubled, according to a 2015 AIIM survey.1 Many users are making the change to reduce IT costs, improve access for external partners and increase mobility. Casey, IT manager at a mid-size healthcare organization, is one of those users planning to move his organization to a cloud-based SharePoint infrastructure. But because Casey works in healthcare, he’s especially concerned about the security of the cloud. And he’s not alone with that concern — AIIM reports that 62 percent of SharePoint users cite security as their biggest concern when considering a cloud or hybrid solution for SharePoint. More specifically, many SharePoint users are concerned about the following three areas of security in the cloud: • Identity and access • Data protection and privacy • Compliance and governance

And why wouldn’t they? If you have a problem, there’s probably a cloud app that can solve it. Plus, on a company-wide level moving away from traditional licensed software to cloud platforms like Office 365, G Suite, Salesforce, etc. delivers the additional benefit of moving from a capex to an opex financial model for your software costs.

The costs of e-discovery are mind-blowing. Despite the technologists who announce advancements in storage, search and retrieval software to help drive down the unit costs, the frequency and sheer volume of e-discovery pushes costs in the opposite direction. With the ever burgeoning amount of data that is being created and retained each and every day, despite our best efforts to “govern” its retention, these costs seem destined to only escalate and further cut into corporate profits.

Buy-and-hold strategies can actually add costs to the datacenter, as systems age in place. Not only do hardware maintenance and software maintenance fees rise, over time – but the aging of applications also costs the organization money. Investing in a transition from POWER5 to POWER7 resulted in a return on investment (ROI) of more than 150 percent over three years. An insightful and and compelling discussion by IDC that reviews the primary reason for maintaining current systems -- Return on Investment. IDC studied IBM Power Systems sites that remained on the POWER5 platform long after its initial introduction in 2004. When comparisons to the succeeding generation of POWER7 are made, customers have found that the increase in scalability and performance of POWER7 systems, combined with a reduction in server "footprint" size and overall electrical requirements, resulted in significant reductions in ongoing costs, or opex, per 100 end users supported.

The software as a service (SaaS) model of application delivery, more commonly known as ‘cloud deployment’, in which software features are accessed through a Web browser, is an excellent way for manufacturing companies to get the bene?ts of enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems without the need to build additional IT infrastructure. ERP functionality delivered “from the cloud” avoids the complexity and costs that often accompany on premisess ERP implementations, and typically provides a much more favorable total cost of ownership, compared to legacy on premisess deployment. Companies subscribe to the software features that they need and can add new ones as business requirements change, without buying additional servers or storage to support new functionality. The ERP features are the same as for an on premises ERP system, except that it is hosted and maintained on the Cloud provider’s infrastructure.
