Tech advances like the cloud, mobile technology, and the app-based software model have changed the way today’s modern business operates. They’ve also changed the way criminals attack and steal from businesses. Criminals strive to be agile in much the same way that companies do. Spreading malware is a favorite technique among attackers. According to the 2019 Data Breach Investigations Report, 28% of data breaches included malware.¹ While malware’s pervasiveness may not come as a surprise to many people, what’s not always so well understood is that automating app attacks—by means of malicious bots —is the most common way cybercriminals commit their crimes and spread malware. It helps them achieve scale.

The Tenth Annual State of the Network Global Study focuses a lens on the network team’s role in security investigations. Results indicate that 88 percent of network teams are now spending time on security issues. In fact, out of 1,035 respondents, nearly 3 out of 4 spend up to 10 hours per week working exclusively on these types of problems - in addition to managing network upgrades, SDN, cloud, and big data initiatives. When it comes to technology adoption, both cloud and 100 GbE deployment continue to grow aggressively. VoIP adoption is closing in on 60 percent and software-defined networking (SDN) is projected to cross the halfway mark, indicating compounding network complexity amidst the ongoing struggle to ID security threats. With growth comes change and some trends identified in this year’s survey include a rise in email and browser-based malware attacks (63 percent) and an increase in sophistication (52 percent). Nearly 1 in 3 also report a surge in DDoS attacks, signaling a ne

What is ransomware? Ransomware is a malicious software designed to hold a user’s files (such as healthcare records, financial contracts, manufacturing blueprints, software code, and other documents) for ransom by encrypting them and demanding the user pay a fee (often in Bitcoin) to decrypt them. How ransomware works Attackers initiate attacks using an array of tactics. Ransomware infections often first begin with an exploit kit — which are software kits designed to identify software vulnerabilities on endpoints and then upload and execute malicious code on the endpoint. Although variants of ransomware behave differently — there are many ways that Cisco can help. Download this whitepaper today to find out more.

Attacks today incorporate increasingly sophisticated methods of social engineering and client-side software manipulation to exfiltrate data without detection. Some attackers leverage so-called spearphishing to entice employees to give up access information and spread their attacks to other enterprise systems; others use password crackers against compromised applications in order to gain further access rights to the network. The attackers might also set up channels for command and control communications with the compromised systems, as in the case of the Zeus or SpyEye bot infections.

A significant paradigm shift occurred in the last few years. Much like other technological shifts of the last decade — when cloud computing changed the way we do business, agile changed the way we develop software and Amazon changed the way we shop — Zero Trust presents us with a new paradigm in how we secure our organizations, our data and our employees. While difficult to identify the precise tipping point, one thing is certain: what were once extraordinarily high-profile, damaging breaches are no longer extraordinary. In just the last 18 months, Yahoo, Accenture, HBO, Verizon, Uber, Equifax, Deloitte, the U.S. SEC, the RNC, the DNC, the OPM, HP, Oracle and a profusion of attacks aimed at the SMB market have all proven that every organization — public or private — is susceptible. The epiphany behind the paradigm shift is clear: Widely-accepted security approaches based on bolstering a trusted network do not work. And they never will. Especially when businesses are dealing with skill

The majority of companies have a difficult time deploying NAC across the enterprise. No existing NAC solution provides access control for all endpoints and operating systems – leaving vulnerable blind spots on the network. Some company leaders spend hundreds of thousands – even millions – of dollars on a NAC solution only to spend years trying to implement the technology. As a result, this can turn into a very frustrating process. However, the solution intended to help you better secure and manage your network shouldn’t wind up creating greater risk and chaos. There are ways to set your network and your team up for success. Here are some tips to help you when considering deploying a NAC solution.
