The cyberattacks of 2017 proved more numerous, sophisticated, and ruthless than in years past. Threat actors, armed with knowledge stolen from the CIA and tools lifted from the NSA, demonstrated an elevated level of proficiency. WannaCry and NotPetya, two prominent threats from last year, successfully exploited these stolen assets in their assault on systems worldwide. As 2017 progressed, new opportunities developed in ransomware-as-a-service (RaaS), opening the gates of malware-for-profit to everyone. Advancements in fileless attacks provided new ways for threats to hide from once reliable detection methods. Malware features such as polymorphism continued to play a powerful role in evading traditional defenses. The victims of cybercrime ranged from private businesses to the fundamental practices of democracy. France and the United States saw significant data breaches during their recent presidential elections. Several high-profile companies lost their customers’ personally identifiable information to cyberattacks, blemishing their brands and costing them untold millions in recovery operations. This report contains an overview of the threat trends and malware families Cylance's customers faced in 2017. This information is shared with the goal of assisting security practitioners, researchers, and individuals in our collective battle against emerging and evolving cyberthreats.

In the running battle with cyberthreats, your first line of defense is your IT staff: the system and network administrators, SOC and NOC operators, incident response and forensics analysts, and application development and QA teams. Are these IT professionals ready to take on an ever-growing army of innovative, persistent cybercriminals and hackers? Probably not, if you expect them to acquire the knowledge and skills they need through self-directed study and on-the-job training. There is too much to learn, and few members of the IT staff have the time to research every new threat. And you can’t afford to suffer through APTs, breaches and data leakages just to provide “teachable moments” for IT personnel. There is another solution. Security simulation immerses IT professionals in a realistic online environment and challenges them to fill the roles of cyberattackers and cyberdefenders. It borrows from education theory and online gaming to present knowledge in ways that motivate learning a

Driven by demands to unify and extend protection across a broad spectrum of threats, EMA sees in this trend the rise of Converged Network Security (CNS) systems that integrate a wide range of capabilities and break down silos in network defense more than ever before. Scott Crawford, Managing Research Director, Security and Risk Management at EMA Research highlights specific examples of the ways in which these converged security systems put today’s more advanced capabilities to work in practical application. The IBM Security Network Protection XGS 5000 is profiled as an example of this trend, delivering not only intelligence driven, application aware defense against a variety of threats, but also the extensibility required to equip today’s organizations to confront whatever may come tomorrow.

The need for threat-focused next-generation firewalls (NGFWs) that can effectively mitigate risks that traditional unified threat management (UTM) and point solutions cannot is highlighted by numerous studies, including one from Cisco that reported that every organization should assume it has been hacked. Cisco threat researchers found malicious traffic was visible on 100 percent of the corporate networks that they observed, with evidence that adversaries had often penetrated those networks and were frequently operating undetected over a long period.

Advances in attacks on network security over the last few years have led to many high-profile compromises of enterprise networks and breaches of data security. A new attack is threatening to expand the potential for attackers to compromise enterprise servers and the critical data on them. Solutions are available, and they will require action by company officers and administrators. “SSLStrip” and related attacks were among the highlights of the July 2009 Black Hat show in Las Vegas. Researcher Moxie Marlinspike combined a number of discrete problems, not all related to SSL, to create a credible scenario in which users attempting to work with secure websites were instead sent to malicious fake sites.

Threat Intelligence is one of the most critical weapons we can use in cyber defense. Knowing which attackers are trying to target your organization, as well as how, why, and when gives you an advantage when trying to thwart these attacks. In today’s landscape, security researchers are a modern-day version of Sherlock Holmes. They’re constantly analyzing clues to an adversary’s motives and techniques, tracking down their ephemeral footprints amidst the chaos of our cyber community. However, these researches can also make hasty conclusions before all the facts are gathered, and dismiss the most important clues during investigations. This evaluation guide is designed to help you evaluate threat intelligence service providers, so that you can effectively put threat intelligence to work for you. You’ll learn: • The 3 characteristics to look for when evaluating threat intelligence vendors • The most important questions to ask when evaluating threat intelligence vendors and what to listen for
