Virtualization has transformed the data center over the past decade. IT departments use virtualization to consolidate multiple server workloads onto a smaller number of more powerful servers. They use virtualization to scale existing applications by adding more virtual machines to support them, and they deploy new applications without having to purchase additional servers to do so. They achieve greater resource utilization by balancing workloads across a large pool of servers in real time—and they respond more quickly to changes in workload or server availability by moving virtual machines between physical servers. Virtualized environments support private clouds on which application engineers can now provision their own virtual servers and networks in environments that expand and contract on demand.

The data center has gone through many major evolutionary changes over the past several decades, and each change has been defined by major shifts in architectures. The industry moved from the mainframe era to client/server computing and then to Internet computing. In 2011, another major shift began: the shift to a virtual data center. This has been the primary driver in enabling customers to transition to the cloud and ultimately IT as a service. The shift to a virtual data center will be the single biggest transition in the history of computing. It will reshape all the major data center tiers: applications, storage, servers and the network.

Walk past your data center, and you might hear a soft, plaintive call: “Feed me, feed me…” It is not your engineers demanding more pizza. It is your servers and applications. And the call is growing louder. Mobile and virtualized workloads, cloud applications, big data, heterogeneous devices: they are all growing in your business, demanding previously unimagined capacity and performance from your servers and data center fabric. And that demand is not slacking. Your employees, applications, and competitive advantage increasingly depend on it. Those servers and applications need to be fed. And if you have not started planning for 40 gigabits per second (Gbps) to the server rack, you will need to soon.

In the time it took you to download and open this eBook, you could have spun up and configured hundreds of virtual machines in a public or private cloud, deployed your application, database, middleware, messaging, load balancers, storage, and other components to those configured servers, linked them all together, and had your app live in production - all with a single click. This isn’t the future we’re describing, it’s right now, and thousands of development teams around the world are doing it. At a high level, we’re describing automation that cloud and APIs enable, and at a low level, we’re describing the outcome of adopting a DevOps mentality and the associated tools. This eBook will look at the basics of DevOps automation, and configuration management to get you started down the right path.

The Secure Data Center is a place in the network (PIN) where a company centralizes data and performs services for business. Data centers contain hundreds to thousands of physical and virtual servers that are segmented by applications, zones, and other methods. This guide addresses data center business flows and the security used to defend them. The Secure Data Center is one of the six places in the network within SAFE. SAFE is a holistic approach in which Secure PINs model the physical infrastructure and Secure Domains represent the operational aspects of a network.

Citrix and Google are collaborating to bring the best, most secure way to deliver virtual apps and desktops from Google Cloud. The Citrix Workspace solutions traditionally installed on data center servers—including Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops, Citrix Networking, and Citrix Content Collaboration (formerly known as Citrix ShareFile)—are now enabled on Google Cloud Platform services. Citrix enables customers to choose the workload deployment option that best aligns with their enterprise cloud strategy and offers a variety of ways to securely deploy Citrix solutions to meet unique application needs. Whether deployed on-premises, cloud-hosted, as a Citrix Workspace service, or with a service provider—customers choose how much and which components of app workloads to manage and when and where to securely deploy business apps, data, and desktops.

Consolidation through server virtualization is a powerful agent for datacenter change, but shrinking your server footprint is just a part of the value that server virtualization brings to your IT organization. This paper explores the TCO of server virtualization, the costs that drive TCO and factors you should consider when calculating the return on your next virtualization investment.

Clearly, data centre modernisation can achieve a wide variety of business benefits for an equally wide variety of organisations. Data centre modernisation programmes are also far reaching. They reach way beyond the desire to merely reduce costs. They add significant business value, and often become the essential cornerstone of digital transformation. When starting on your own path towards modernisation, it’s vital to recognise that your success depends on making use of advanced public cloud services that sit at the vanguard of enterprise technology’s capabilities. If they don’t, you risk not being able to gain access to a world of new possibilities.

Today, nearly every datacenter has become heavily virtualized. In fact, according to Gartner as many as 75% of X86 server workloads are already virtualized in the enterprise datacenter. Yet even with the growth rate of virtual machines outpacing the rate of physical servers, industry wide, most virtual environments continue to be protected by backup systems designed for physical servers, not the virtual infrastructure they are used on. Even still, data protection products that are virtualization-focused may deliver additional support for virtual processes, but there are pitfalls in selecting the right approach. This paper will discuss five common costs that can remain hidden until after a virtualization backup system has been fully deployed.

Your goal is high availability for the applications, databases, virtual machines (VMs), servers, and data that run your business. When access is lost or interrupted, recovery speed is critical, and must be measured in minutes and seconds, not hours of days. And if your backup and recovery strategy includes point solutions with limited coverage, legacy approaches that don't support today's modern technologies, or manual proc cesses that are time-consuming and complex, you may not be ready when disaster strikes.
