The state of threat intelligence in the information security community is still very immature. Many organizations are still combating threats in a reactive manner, only learning what they're dealing with, well...when they're dealing with it. There is a wealth of information in the community, and many organizations have been gathering data about attackers and trends for years. How can we share that information, and what kinds of intelligence are most valuable? In this presentation, we'll start with a brief overview of AlienVault's Open Threat Exchange™ (OTX), and then we'll discuss attack trends and techniques seen in enterprise networks today, with supporting data from AlienVault OTX. We'll also take a look at some new models for collaboration and improving the state of threat intelligence going forward.

The public demands accountability for data breaches involving systems that include personally identifiable information (PII) and expects that all educational institutions will have the same levels of security that Fortune 500 companies do. However, most educational institutions have fewer IT security resources than their larger enterprise counterparts, yet they face the same threats from attackers. Fortunately, there are solutions. This whitepaper by SANS instructor Jake Williams walks through an example of a typical breach in an education organization, highlighting common ways attackers gain access to a network and practical steps to reduce risk. Download this whitepaper to learn: • Common security gaps that make educational institutions vulnerable to attack • Practical security controls that won't break the bank • Key questions to evaluate security vendors • A checklist summarizing steps you should take now to improve security

If you haven’t had first-hand experience with ransomware in the past, chances are you’ve heard of one of the many ransomware attacks that have recently caught worldwide attention. According to a June 2016 survey from Osterman Research, nearly one in two participants indicated that their organization suffered at least one ransomware attack in the last year. In this whitepaper, we’ll cover ransomware basics and provide best practices for ransomware prevention and detection. You’ll learn: • What ransomware is, how it works, and who the attackers are • 10 best practices you can employ now to detect and prevent ransomware • How you can quickly detect ransomware and other threats with AlienVault USM Download this whitepaper now to learn more about ransomware, best practices for defense, and how AlienVault USM helps you detect ransomware quickly with a unified approach to security.

Threat Intelligence is one of the most critical weapons we can use in cyber defense. Knowing which attackers are trying to target your organization, as well as how, why, and when gives you an advantage when trying to thwart these attacks. In today’s landscape, security researchers are a modern-day version of Sherlock Holmes. They’re constantly analyzing clues to an adversary’s motives and techniques, tracking down their ephemeral footprints amidst the chaos of our cyber community. However, these researches can also make hasty conclusions before all the facts are gathered, and dismiss the most important clues during investigations. This evaluation guide is designed to help you evaluate threat intelligence service providers, so that you can effectively put threat intelligence to work for you. You’ll learn: • The 3 characteristics to look for when evaluating threat intelligence vendors • The most important questions to ask when evaluating threat intelligence vendors and what to listen for

Financial services companies have been the target of a serious, sustained, and well-funded DDoS campaign for more than a year. What these attacks have continued to demonstrate is that DDoS will continue to be a popular and increasingly complex attack vector. DDoS is no longer simply a network issue, but is increasingly a feature or additional aspect of other advanced targeted attacks. The motivation of modern attackers can be singular, but the threat landscape continues to become more complex and mixes various threats to increase the likelihood of success. There have certainly been cases where the MSSP was successful at mitigating against an attack but the target Website still went down due to corruption of the underlying application and data. In order to defend networks today, enterprises need to deploy DDoS security in multiple layers, from the perimeter of their network to the provider cloud, and ensure that on-premise equipment can work in harmony with provider networks for effective and robust attack mitigation

As the world becomes more connected, it is no longer enough for enterprises to react once an alert indicates an attacker is inside the network. Instead, with continuous packet capture and threat feeds followed by analysis, it is now possible to hunt the attackers and locate them versus waiting for an alert.

Effective security for cloud-hosted web applications requires full visibility into the environment in which the apps live and the potential exposure to vulnerabilities — and to do so consistently, while proactively monitoring for attacks without causing delays in application development and delivery. Cloud adoption means that a focus on perimeter security is not sufficient and may even be obstructive, because it can impact application performance and availability. Similarly, relying on your cloud service provider’s security services is insufficient; any provider will tell you that securing the cloud environment is a shared responsibility between cloud service provider and customer, and the responsibility for specifically securing web applications is the sole responsibility of the customer. And although the industry as a whole has become better at protecting lower-level network and server resources, as attackers look for targets, they are moving up the application stack.

Unix and Linux build the foundation for most business-critical systems. Thus, these present target-rich environments for cyber-attackers. Privileged Access Management (PAM) helps to mitigate such risks. To succeed, organizations must follow an integrated approach, covering both privilege elevation and centralized management of shared account credentials.

Protecting privileged access and preventing breaches remains an urgent concern for companies of all sizes. Attackers are using a wider range of more sophisticated methods to infiltrate vulnerable systems. And although news of external breaches often dominates headlines, organizations must also be able to defend against insider threats.

Thanks to numerous, headline-making incidents in recent years, cybercrime has risen toward the top of the concern list for many organizations—and the customers with whom they do business. You’ve heard many of the stories. Major health insurers, such as Anthem, Premera BlueCross and CareFirst had personal information for millions of their customers stolen. Sony Pictures experienced a breach that not only embarrassed employees and adversely impacted the release of the high-profile film, “The Interview,” but also damaged systems and applications—making it extremely difficult for the company to conduct business. The list goes on. Some you maybe haven’t heard, like the one about CodeSpaces, a provider of version management services to developers. When attackers were able to gain access to its cloud-based management consoles, they deleted the company’s entire infrastructure and backups—ultimately forcing CodeSpaces out of business. The bad news for organizations like yours is, thanks to the
