The concept of integrated business planning — closing gaps in an organization’s various planning functions and aligning operations and strategy with its financial performance — has existed in various forms for decades. What has changed is creation of planning platforms that can handle the fluidity of data to erase silos and enterprise borders where once there were multiple geographies, departments, time zones, languages and currencies. All elements of business are managing the avalanche of information coming to them. Just like connecting disparate people, we also must connect data that resides in various systems, applications and tools.

Finance has a mandate to become a strategic business partner. Integrated business planning offers organizations the ability to align operations and sales strategy with the company’s continuous financial performance. An increasing number of organizations have shown that even small steps toward integrated business planning have helped them deliver immediate benefits to the business, including light-touch forecasts, rapid “what-if” analyses, and more accurate budgets. Improved collaboration between departments, driving more awareness and shared understanding of potential issues, allows the business to take the prompt and incisive actions needed to keep performance on track. The question to consider is not “When are we going to do this?” but “Why don’t we start now?” because time is ticking away.

Over a decade ago, mobile telephony entered the enterprise through the back door: employees who could afford mobile phones occasionally used them for business; specific business units budgeted for employee mobiles and then procured them locally; policies surrounding the usage of mobile phones for work were - where they existed at all - haphazard; there was little means of policy enforcement; and in no case were these mobile phones integrated into a business's fixed telephony strategy, let alone its IT strategy. This stands in sharp contrast to other office technologies, such as PCs, faxes, and copiers.

The migration from a traditional enterprise IT infrastructure architecture with separate servers, separate traditional SAN, and separate hyperscale public cloud to an integrated hyperconverged architecture including Server SAN and an integrated hybrid cloud is a profound change. Wikibon explores the premise that the migration is justified, and the optimum hybrid cloud strategy is to use the same architecture and software for both the on-premises True Private Cloud and the public cloud services. Wikibon uses the term “True Hybrid Cloud” to describe this approach.

Enterprise chief information security officers (CISOs) are seeking ways to leverage existing security investments to bridge the divide between largely siloed security systems. The focus is on reducing the number of consoles needed to manage the security infrastructure. Network security vendors have a significant role to play in bridging the communication gap between these systems. The creation of a unified defense architecture enables threat data exchange between existing security systems. It helps automate the process of raising an organization's security posture when a security infrastructure component detects a threat. The following questions were posed by Fortinet to Robert Ayoub, program director in IDC's Security Products program, on behalf of Fortinet's customers.
