Today, hybrid cloud is increasingly the norm, and enterprises are challenged with ways to have visibility, manage and make use of all this data – both on-premises and in the cloud. While much attention has been given to primary data affecting mission-critical workloads, data for secondary workloads – backup, test/dev, disaster recovery, and archiving to name a few – have become siloed the same way application data has, leading to multiple point solutions to manage an increasing amount of data. This white paper looks at the evolution of these challenges and offers practical advice on ways to store, manage and move secondary data in hybrid cloud architectures while extracting the hidden value it can provide. If your organization runs VMware vSphere-based cloud infrastructure in your on-premises data center, but you have been reluctant to migrate applications to the cloud for fear of losing some VMware vSphere-based cloud capabilities, VMware Cloud on AWS solves this problem by seamlessly integrating your familiar VMware virtualization and cloud management tools with Amazon Web Services (AWS). Many organizations believe that moving their applications to the cloud makes it necessary to introduce new tools, skills, and processes. This can present a new set of challenges because learning to use new tools, applying new skills, and adapting to new processes can be costly and time-consuming. In this eBook, we dive deeper into how these challenges can hinder hybrid cloud adoption and cover how VMware Cloud on AWS can help your organization overcome these challenges. The all-encompassing data center is a thing of the past. Modern data environments are distributed and include remote and branch offices, mobile devices, and the Internet of Things (IoT) as well as cloud solutions such as infrastructure as a service (IaaS), platform as a service (PaaS), and software as a service (SaaS). There’s more critical data to back up than ever before. Plus, data silos and fragmented management mean poor visibility, which can make it difficult to comply with regional data residency and security rules as well as service-level agreements (SLAs). On-premises data protection has not kept pace. According to a survey by Fujitsu, 45% of IT managers said they had lost data or productivity related to data protection inefficiency within the last year.1 Often, this is because on-premises backups are cumbersome and do not always happen on time.

Maintaining business continuity is your highest priority. In today’s commercial landscape, business continuity depends on the efficient, uninterrupted flow of data across the organization – from operations to sales to fulfillment. Even a brief lapse in workload continuity can mean thousands of lost sales opportunities, disruption to production, and compromised customer trust. The causes of those lapses can range from natural disasters to mechanical failure or human error. You need a data platform and a proactive disaster recovery (DR) strategy that will help you stay up and running in the event that your physical infrastructure is unavailable for any length of time. BUSINESS CONTINUITY Fulfilling orders, providing a high level of customer service, and keeping consumers engaged all depend on the efficient, uninterrupted flow of data throughout your organization. CUSTOMER TRUST Above all, protecting customer data—especially personally identifiable information (PII) —is critical

IT admins tasked with restoring servers or lost data during a disruption are consumed with a single-minded purpose: successful recovery. But it shouldn’t take an adverse event to underscore the importance of recovery as part of an overall backup strategy. This is especially true with large datasets. Before you consider how you’re going to back up large datasets, first consider how you may need to recover the data.

In the last few years, businesses have changed the way they protect data. Studies show they’re abandoning traditional backup and recovery in favor of disaster recovery as a service (DRaaS).1 With DRaaS, businesses enjoy the luxury of keeping a replica of their data hosted at a remote site that they can fail over to in an emergency—without bearing any of the infrastructure costs or maintenance responsibilities. All infrastructure and maintenance is the responsibility of the provider. Gartner predicts that global DRaaS revenue will reach $3.4 billion by 2019. The firm cited several reasons for the shift:
