The state of threat intelligence in the information security community is still very immature. Many organizations are still combating threats in a reactive manner, only learning what they're dealing with, well...when they're dealing with it. There is a wealth of information in the community, and many organizations have been gathering data about attackers and trends for years. How can we share that information, and what kinds of intelligence are most valuable? In this presentation, we'll start with a brief overview of AlienVault's Open Threat Exchange™ (OTX), and then we'll discuss attack trends and techniques seen in enterprise networks today, with supporting data from AlienVault OTX. We'll also take a look at some new models for collaboration and improving the state of threat intelligence going forward.

With attackers using increasingly-sophisticated ways to break into systems, manual methods of locating and inspecting devices on your network are no longer enough. The right Vulnerability Management (VM) solution can monitor your environment, enabling you to: discover devices running in your network, determine whether they are vulnerable to attack, find fixes to the underlying problems, and protect yourself while those fixes are being implemented

“EDR alone is simply not enough to empower security pros to detect, investigate, and respond to attacks at the pace they need to keep up with modern attackers. A broader detection and response approach is needed.” Register now and receive this exclusive white paper. Dave Gruber, ESG Senior Analyst takes a look at how you can increase the efficiency and effectiveness of detection and response through XDR, along with: • Strategic insight into the current state of threat detection and response, providing you with ESG’s comprehensive research and findings. • Current challenges affecting today’s organizations, including the time and resources required and numerous gaps that EDR exposes. • Valuable foresight into what’s next and how XDR—detection and response across email, endpoint, servers, cloud workloads, and network—can help solve these issues.

Financial services organizations operate under a host of regulatory standards. This makes sense, as the assets and information managed by these firms are valuable, sensitive, and targeted by sophisticated cyber attackers daily. Compounding these challenges is the large volume of personally identifiable information (PII) that financial organizations handle regularly. PII is subject to many compliance regulations, notably the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which regulates not only the processing of personal data, including PII, relating to individuals in the EU, for also any organization that processes personal data of EU residents. For US banking consumers, Section 5 (Unfair or Deceptive Acts or Practices) of the Federal Trade Commission Act and numerous state regulations enforce basic consumer protections, which financial organizations must also uphold.

Adversaries spend 100 percent of their time finding weak links and using them to their advantage. And as the Internet of Things accelerates and our dependence on the connected environment continues to expand, so do opportunities for attackers. Download the Cisco 2014 Midyear Security Report to learn about the different types of vulnerabilities that exist in the systems we rely upon, including the Internet itself, and what can be done to reduce their number and impact.

Zero-day attacks and advanced persistent threats have outstripped the capabilities of traditional security methods that rely exclusively on detection and blocking. At the same time, the Internet of Everything (IoE) is accelerating. Opportunities are opening up for businesses and attackers alike as more things come online, along with the people, processes, and data that interact with them.

Every year some new shiny object seems to be working security marketers into a frenzy. The Advanced Persistent Threat hype continues to run amok 3 years in, and doesn’t seem to be abating at all. Of course there is still lot of confusion about what the APT is, and a Securosis post from early 2010 explains our view pretty well.

Security threats are very real, and the stakes are higher than ever. Each day, tens of thousands of malware variants are created, with new classes of threats continually added and improved upon. Savvy attackers use polymorphic programs to alter malware into new form factors after each delivery. And all of this is exacerbated by the proliferation of mobile devices, cloud computing and social media—in fact, the intersection of these technologies provides fertile new ground for threats and malware. Today’s attacks are often not random, but targeted for maximum financial gain and impact. Rogue individuals and groups are constantly innovating new ways to attack organizations’ most valuable assets. As a result, traditional methods of dealing with threats are no longer enough. Organizations need more threat intelligence than ever before in order to effectively protect themselves.

The article is a helpful reminder that your employees often make life easier for attackers by being the weakest link in your network defenses. Social media is a rich hunting ground for hackers. Names, locations, photos, interests, connections, partnerships, vacation details, email addresses and phone numbers – this is often the information that hackers use to target specific employees through well-crafted, highly personalized emails.

The longer attackers remain in your network, the more lateral movement is possible and the greater the risk for data theft. Stopping the exfiltration of data, rather than focusing on stopping data breaches, is the most realistic approach to data security and reducing cyber dwell time.

In our first cyber security checklist, we provided a security overview and best practices to help organizations prevent an initial compromise from occurring. In this guide, we will help you understand practical steps you can take to mitigate techniques attackers use once they have penetrated your defenses. Once attackers have access to a machine, they can evade detection by using fileless techniques and legitimate system administration tools to do their dirty work. With this checklist, you will have a guide to help mitigate the impact of an attacker. Lastly, we will hep you understand how partnering with a company like Alert Logic can provide better defenses to stop attackers in their tracks. This checklist helps to explain how to: • How to manage and limit PowerShell access • Securing and utilizing Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) • Ways to apply application controls • Following the principle of least privilege and applying access controls • What to monitor for to help uncover

Nowhere else could that wise advice be more relevant than in contemplating the effects of cyber attacks on financial institutions. As stated in a recent issue of the FDIC’s Supervisory Insights, the risks presented by cyber attacks have become “one of the most critical challenges [in the last decade] facing the financial services sector due to the frequency and increasing sophistication of cyber attacks.” In just a year’s time, from 2014 to 2015, the occurrence of security incidents increased 38 percent as reported in a survey of 10,000 security, IT, and executive personnel. Just as concerning, the attackers perpetrating these breaches were able to compromise the victim organization within a matter of minutes in 60 percent of cases.
