Virtualization does have its dangers, as it incurs greater stress on physical resources. While under utilization of CPU may be a driving factor to virtualize servers, other hardware resources may become overtaxed. Given that a host system has limited ability (depends on application) to page memory used by the guest systems, the most recognized bottleneck to address is physical memory (RAM). Options to programmatically alleviate memory bottlenecks incur performance issues when the disk is re-introduced. Another major component and perhaps less acknowledged is the disk subsystem. In many cases, depending the purpose and application of the guest/virtual systems, the disk bottleneck will be the most significant barrier to performance. Communications service providers are looking for alternative deployment models that will help them support fast-growing network demand. Moving to a virtualized EPC (vEPC) solution can help service providers achieve more cost-e?ective scaling by using standard high-volume servers in place of purpose-built systems. System integrators, software vendors, and platform providers rely on Intel® technologies to deliver the performance and scalability required for vEPC solutions. Intel is also participating in the development of open standards, contributing to the open source community, developing reference architectures, engaging with industry participants, and collaborating on trials that can help facilitate the evolution to vEPC solutions and accelerate network transformation by use of network functions virtualization.

Virtualization is rapidly changing the way business IT operates, from small local businesses to multinational corporations. If you are reading this, chances are good that your company is already taking advantage of virtualization’s benefits. Virtualization means that a single underlying piece of hardware, such as a server, runs multiple guest operating systems to create virtual machines, or VMs, with each of them being oblivious to the others. An administrative application, such as VMware, manages the sharing process, allocating hardware resources, memory, and CPU time to each VM as needed. And all applications look at this software construct exactly as if it were a real, physical server — even the VM thinks it’s a real server! Virtualization makes good financial sense. It enables a single server to offer multiple capabilities that otherwise would require separate servers. It includes native high availability features, so you don’t have to use any more complex clustering tools. This ab

EMC has recently enhanced its VNX block-based deduplication technology enabling flexible data reduction across a wide variety of use cases from virtual desktops to virtual servers and databases. While block-based deduplication is not new for VNX, this latest enhancement, according to EMC, offers up to a 3x better performance at half the response time.

Web Application Threats Are Evolving. Are Your Security Efforts Keeping Pace? Today, Web application security threats are not only becoming more abundant than ever, but also more difficult to detect, and more complex to solve. Many organizations are responding to these unique vulnerabilities with traditional network security approaches. However, sophisticated Web applications threats require a more sophisticated security strategy. What’s worked in the past won’t necessarily work today; and what’s more, Web application security requires a comprehensive solution, not simply a series of a la carte provisions. For detailed steps toward improving your Web application security strategy, download the VeriSign® Enterprise Security Services white paper, Best Practices That Improve Web Application Security.

Chuck Dubuque - Product Marketing Manager, Red Hat Server and desktop virtualization technologies, which bring cost and agility advantages to enterprise IT, have become mainstream in most datacenters. However, after nearly 10 years, virtualized servers still only represent about 30 percent of x86 production workloads due to technology limitations and the expense of proprietary virtualization platforms. In this session, Chuck Dubuque will cover: * The benefits of datacenter virtualization * Technologies in the open source community that will enable pervasive virtualization * The move to the cloud * The particular advantages of Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization and the Red Hat subscription model

The data center has gone through many major evolutionary changes over the past several decades, and each change has been defined by major shifts in architectures. The industry moved from the mainframe era to client/server computing and then to Internet computing. In 2011, another major shift began: the shift to a virtual data center. This has been the primary driver in enabling customers to transition to the cloud and ultimately IT as a service. The shift to a virtual data center will be the single biggest transition in the history of computing. It will reshape all the major data center tiers: applications, storage, servers and the network.

The enterprise data center has undergone several major shifts since the introduction of computing as a business resource. Data centers have evolved from mainframes to client/server to virtual servers, and then to being “software defned,” and fnally to their current state of disaggregation. Today, we sit on the precipice of the next major data center transition—the evolution to an intent-based data center (IBDC) (Exhibit 1). Each transition saw the cost of computing decrease and the importance of the network increase, and each enabled organizations to boost the efciency of their data center operations and improve asset utilization—ultimately leading to a better experience for users
